Applications are now open for the 2022 Metaphysics Summer School on the topic of truthmaker semantics!
The Summer School will be hosted by the MAP – the Master in Philosophy at Università della Svizzera italiana – and will be held in Lugano, Switzerland, from June 13 to June 17, 2022. The deadline for applications is January 15, 2022.
Instructors:
Kit Fine (NYU)
Martin Glazier (Geneva)
Short description:
On the truthmaker approach to semantics, the meaning of a statement is identified with the set of states which exactly verify it. Truthmaker semantics differs from possible worlds semantics in its use of states rather than worlds. It differs from other forms of situation semantics in its use of an exact notion of verification, which requires that a state be wholly relevant to the statement it verifies, rather than an inexact notion, which requires only partial relevance. This approach to semantics is receiving increasing interest, much of it driven by a sense that the approach can handle hyperintensional contexts better than other approaches.
During the summer school, participants will be using a pre-publication copy of the book on truthmaker semantics that Kit Fine is co-authoring with Mark Jago.
Who can apply:
The Summer School is open to both graduate students and post-graduate scholars.
